The paint surface carries the characteristic woven texture of Segantini's mature divisionist method: each passage constructed from long, filament-like strokes of distinct colour laid side by side rather than blended, so that the whole image vibrates with a clarity no academic brushstroke could achieve.Segantini painted this work during the years he spent in the Engadin valley of the Swiss Alps, the period that defined his mature reputation.
