Provenance: Family of the artist Hessel de Boer (1921–2003) Hessel de Boer was born in Haarlem on 20 February 1921 and died in The Hague on 20 July 2003. He was a Dutch painter and draughtsman, best known for his portraits, figure studies, landscapes, still lifes and cityscapes, particularly those of The Hague. De Boer studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where he was taught by artists including Paul Citroen, Rein Draijer and Willem Schrofer. After completing his studies, he established himself in The Hague and remained closely connected with the city's artistic community throughout his career. He was a member of both Pulchri Studio and the Haagsche Kunstkring, two important artists' societies in The Hague. A defining characteristic of De Boer's work is his fascination with light and atmosphere. Particularly in his landscapes and city scenes, he used a refined, stippling brush technique, placing small touches of different colours alongside one another. This creates a luminous and lively surface, allowing light to appear almost as though it emerges from the paint itself. His work is therefore often associated with Dutch Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism. Although The Hague was a recurring subject in his work, De Boer was not primarily interested in creating strictly topographical representations. Instead, he sought to capture the mood, light and colour of a particular place. Alongside landscapes and cityscapes, he produced numerous portraits and figure paintings. His portraits were valued not only for their likeness, but also for their sensitive attention to the character of the sitter. De Boer remained committed to figurative painting throughout his career, even during a period when abstraction was becoming increasingly prominent in the Dutch art world. Alongside his work as a painter, he taught at the Vrije Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, where he influenced and encouraged a younger generation of artists.
