THE WATCH The Omega Speedmaster Date is powered by the OMEGA calibre 1155, a dependable automatic chronograph movement based on the well-proven ETA 7750 movement architecture. Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering around a 42-hour power reserve, it delivers the kind of durability and consistency you’d expect from a watch built for everyday wear. The case follows the familiar Speedmaster formula, measuring 39mm by 14mm, giving it a solid presence on the wrist without losing its classic proportions. Signature elements like the tachymeter bezel, and pump pushers alongside a signed crown keep it firmly rooted in the Speedmaster lineage. On the dial, however, it sets itself apart with a less common vertical chronograph layout and a date window at three o’clock. The distinctive arrangement of the subdials, combined with a reverse panda colour scheme and lumed hour markers, creates a look that blends vintage Speedmaster cues with a more modern, dynamic edge. A BIT OF TRIVIA Omega Speedmaster is a line of chronograph wristwatches produced by Omega SA. While chronographs have existed since the late 1800s, Omega first introduced this line of chronographs in 1957. Since then, many different chronograph movements have been marketed under the Speedmaster. Astronaut Walter Schirra was the first person to wear one in space in 1962 during his Mercury-Atlas 8 mission. The manual winding Speedmaster Professional or "Moonwatch" is the best-known and longest produced; it was worn during the first American spacewalk as part of NASA's Gemini 4 mission and was the first watch worn by an astronaut walking on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission. The Speedmaster Professional remains one of several watches qualified by NASA for spaceflight and is still the only one so qualified for EVA (Extravehicular activity). The Speedmaster line also includes other models, including analog-digital and automatic mechanical watches. Not all Speedmasters are in fact Moonwatches. Notably, the brand has for many years produced a wide assortment of variations on the classic chronograph design, from heritage models to moon phases, to even Moonswatches and bejewelled versions. One variation to skew from the beaten path of the professional line was the Speedmaster Date, an interesting, loosely aligned series particularly popular around the turn-of-the-century and the decade or so after in models like this example, the reverse panda, here, with reference. 175.0043 OUR THOUGHTS What is there not to love about the reverse panda, it’s now a modern-day classic, with a nod to its vintage roots. This one’s tachymeter bezel is in great shape, just showing a little softness in places and with a fully serviced bullet proof cal. 1155 (ETA 7750), which is perfect for everyday use, this reverse panda is worthy of any collector’s watch.
