For decades, professional wood finishers have accepted drying time as part of the job. Apply the finish. Wait for it to dry. Wait for it to cure. Then finally deliver, install or return the surface to service. Osmo LED Smart-Oil changes that. Using Osmo's dedicated UV LED curing system, this revolutionary hardwax oil can be fully cured in seconds rather than days. For professional workshops and contractors, that means dramatically faster turnaround times, reduced storage requirements and the ability to complete projects that would previously have taken days in a single visit. Once cured, LED Smart-Oil provides exceptional durability, water resistance and protection against everyday wear while retaining the natural appearance and feel of the timber. The low VOC formulation makes it particularly suitable for workshop and on-site use, while the food-safe and toy-safe finish ensures it is suitable for a wide range of commercial and residential applications. If time is money, Osmo LED Smart-Oil could be one of the smartest investments a professional wood finisher can make. Surface prep Proper preparation is essential to achieving an even colour, reliable curing and the best possible finish: Ensure the timber is clean, dry and free from dust, grease, waxes, silicones and any other contaminants. Completely remove any existing finishes, coatings, or surface treatments before application. Sand the timber evenly using the appropriate abrasive sequence for the timber species and application. Sand to a P180 grit on most woods such as Pine, Oak, Beech. P120 for dense woods like Walnut, Mahogany and Cedar, and P80-100 (followed by a wipe of methylated spirits) for oily, super dense exotic woods like Teak and Iroko. This helps the oil absorb into the wood grain. Pay particular attention to consistency when sanding, as uneven preparation can affect both colour uptake and the final appearance. Thoroughly remove all sanding dust using a vacuum and lint-free cloth. Inspect the surface carefully before application. Any contamination left on the timber may become visible once the finish is applied. Always carry out a test application on a spare piece or inconspicuous area to check colour, compatibility, and final appearance. As with all coloured wood finishes, the final result is heavily influenced by surface preparation and timber species. Taking the time to prepare properly will deliver the best possible finish. How to apply Prepare the timber as described in surface prep. Stir the oil thoroughly before use. Apply a thin, even coat using a suitable applicator. Check the surface for even coverage and remove any excess product before curing. Cure immediately using a 395nm LED-UV lamp, holding the lamp 2-10cm above the surface and moving it steadily across the workpiece. We recommend Osmo's UV LED Smartlight Pro Lamp, which has been specifically developed for use with Smart-Oil. For higher-wear surfaces, apply a second coat if required and cure as above. The surface is ready for use immediately after curing. Osmo LED Smart-Oil is designed to be used with the dedicated Osmo UV LED Smartlight Pro Lamp. Alternative UV lamps, workshop lights or sunlight exposure will not provide reliable curing performance. Top tips Preparation has a significant impact on both colour consistency and finish quality. Apply thin, even coats for best results. One coat is often sufficient for decorative and lower-wear surfaces such as panelling, shelving and cabinet carcasses. Consider a second coat for higher-wear applications such as floors, staircases, desktops and table tops. If you prefer a matt appearance, consider finishing with Osmo Polyx-Oil after the initial Smart-Oil application. Some oily, dense and exotic timber species (including teak, mahogany, iroko, acacia, and ipe) require a coarser sanding grit and may require particularly thin application. Always carry out a test application before starting work. Green Oak is not recommended, as moisture levels are often above the maximum recommended for successful application. Timbers previously coated with varnish, lacquer or other surface finishes must be sanded back to bare wood before applying LED Smart-Oil. Avoid cleaning with antibacterial sprays, bleach-based cleaners, or aggressive chemical products, as these can prematurely degrade the finish. Clean routinely using a damp cloth and a suitable wood floor or furniture cleaner. Technical data Download the product data sheet. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Causes serious eye irritation.
