Distilled at the legendary Caroni Distillery in Trinidad before its closure in 2002, this exceptional rum matured patiently for 22 years before being bottled at a formidable 66.0% ABV. Selected from a single cask (#2286) and released in collaboration with East Asia Whisky, Tortuga No.1 quickly gained recognition among Caroni enthusiasts for its powerful yet beautifully integrated profile. As the first ever Tortuga bottling, this release holds a special place in the history of Precious Liquors. Long before the Mizunara-finished Tortuga No.3, this inaugural edition laid the foundations for a series dedicated not only to outstanding rum, but also to supporting the protection of endangered sea turtles through partnerships with conservation initiatives. The Tortuga Series draws inspiration from the fragile ecosystems surrounding many rum-producing regions, reminding us that great spirits can also contribute to preserving the natural world that shaped them. Today, Tortuga No.1 remains one of the rarest and most collectible Precious Liquors releases, highly sought after by enthusiasts of both Caroni and early independent bottlings. Tasting Notes Tasting note: Nose: Rich and unmistakably Caroni. Layers of burnt rubber, fresh tar, diesel oil and smoke intertwine with roasted pineapple, brown sugar, leather and hints of marzipan. The elevated strength adds intensity without overwhelming the complexity. Palate: Surprisingly elegant for its proof. Notes of caramel, dark brown sugar and tropical fruits emerge alongside classic Caroni characteristics of fuel, black olives, leather and fresh asphalt. Ginger spice, roasted coconut, oak tannins and bitter grapefruit provide structure and remarkable depth. Finish: Long, persistent and evolving, delivering peppermint freshness, vanilla sweetness, olive oil, leather and delicate red berry notes.
