Perched at 1760 meters above sea level on the expansive slopes of Mount Kenya, Ngurueri is a historic coffee washing station established in 1968. Today, it supports nearly 1500 smallholder farmers and is one of four factories within the Murue Farmers Cooperative Society. The region’s nutrient rich red volcanic soil, combined with cool temperatures ranging from 12–26°C, creates the perfect environment for producing high quality coffee. Harvest season is a time of precision and care. Farmers handpick ripe coffee cherries and deliver them to the mill the very same day. At intake, a dedicated “Cherry Clerk” carefully inspects each delivery, rejecting any underripe or damaged fruit, and records the weight and farmer details with meticulous accuracy. Once enough cherries are collected, they are pulped and transferred to fermentation tanks, where they rest for 12 to 48 hours depending on the ambient temperature. After fermentation, the coffee is fully washed to remove all remaining mucilage and is graded by quality. Some lots are then soaked under clean, circulating water for up to 24 hours, enhancing clarity and brightness in the cup. The beans are then spread across raised drying beds, where they dry slowly over 2 to 3 weeks. During this time, they are carefully turned and protected from intense midday sun to ensure even drying and preserve quality. Ngurueri’s commitment extends far beyond processing. The cooperative actively invests in farmer education through training programs, Good Agricultural Practice seminars, and ongoing support in crop husbandry and land management. Farmers also benefit from access to financial advances for farm inputs, as well as assistance for school fees and community development. With annual training for factory managers and a strong focus on sustainability and quality control, Ngurueri continues to refine its craft, producing coffees that reflect both the richness of its land and the dedication of its people.
