Costa Rica Finca Amistad
Melon, Citrus, Caramel This washed Caturra and Catuai mix comes from Finca Amistad, a third generation farm in Costa Rica's Coto Brus, Puntarenas region. Finca Amistad is owned and operated by Roberto Montero, whose grandfather founded the farm back in the early 20th century. It's remarkable for its coffee, sure, but also for its commitment to organic and community-enhancing practices. When it was established, Amistad was a sprawling 10,000 hectare property, thick with wildlife and vegetation. Over the years, the Montero family gave 60% of the property to the Cost Rican government, so it could be used as a wildlife preserve. Of the remaining 4,000 hectares, less than 10% is dedicated to coffee cultivation, with the lion's share protected as a wildlife haven. As if that weren't enough, Roberto is dedicated to organic farming practices, helps fund local schools, and provides over 100 jobs to his friends and neighbors. In short, if you're interested in coffees that make you feel good about drinking them this one is hard to top (and if you're stone-hearted flavor-hound, you're gonna love it too). Pristine washed tones dominate the cup, infused with an oh-so-sweet Costa Rican character. Melon stretches prominently across the temperature range, sugary, refreshing, just a touch musky. That fruited note pairs with a hit of citrus, which provides just enough zing to balance the melon's sugars. A rich and resonant caramel streak rounds out the finish, lingering and enhancing depth. It's a classic cup that you can brew every way and drink everyday.
