A very elegant early nineteenth century end table, wine table or lamp table standing on lyre end supports with parallel uprights terminating in ninety degree curve ending parallel to the ground. This table is of exceptional quality construction meaning that the usual lower stretcher has been dispensed with and it relies on the strength of its tenons instead. The colour has faded to a desirable golden honey but it can be made darker if required. There is a slide hidden in the frieze which might once have held a fabric container for the storage of samplers and similar works in progress. There is no stamp, but this table is certain to have been made by Gillows of Lancaster and London, there are illustrations in the sketch books and a photograph of a similar table in Susan Stuart's excellent book about Gillows. It is in very good condition except for an old and well disguised repair to the end grain of two of the legs which cannot be seen when standing next to the table. Also worth noting is that there is a small amount of lateral movement which is due to the nature of the design rather than loose joints. This means that the table, while suitable for drinks, a lamp, photo frames and so on, is not suitable for use as a writing desk for instance. This table really does represent the best in design, timber and construction of the period and would have been ordered for a very fine house indeed. Museum quality antique furniture has not been this affordable for a long time!
