His photographs featured extensively in the paper during those years, sometime with an unconventional twist, and sometimes making creative use of the black and white medium of the day. After studying photography at the (then) Harrow College of Technology and Art, John started as a full-time photographer with the Fleet Street News Agency. He subsequently went freelance, and worked for the Fleet Street nationals, before becoming a regular freelance with the Times in 1982. He joined the Independent as a staff photographer four years later. During the 16 years John was at the Independent, he travelled extensively, covering major international news events, such as the Reykjavík Summit meeting between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev; the Russian troop withdrawal from Afghanistan; the first Gulf War and the Palestinian Intifada, amongst others. In 1989 the World Press Photo yearbook devoted a double page spread to John’s photographs of a Russian army base on the outskirts of Kabul. In 2002 John left the Independent to john Reuters as a picture editor, spending two years in the Reuters Singapore bureau, working as a senior picture editor on their Global picture desk. After returning to London, John eventually left full-time employment in 2015, to subsequently return to Reuters as a part-time picture editor, where he still works. John now enjoys the opportunity to shoot photographs for himself, for stock, and attempts to pass on any useful experience he may have picked up, to whoever will listen.
