Hypersthene is a member of the Pyroxene mineral family, forming within igneous and metamorphic rocks as magnesium and iron-rich silicate minerals crystallise under high temperature and pressure conditions. Its name comes from the Greek for above strength, a reference to its hardness relative to Hornblende, the mineral it was originally compared to. The schiller effect — the soft, moving shimmer visible when light catches the surface — is caused by light reflecting from thin parallel layers of mineral inclusions within the crystal structure, similar to the effect seen in Labradorite and Moonstone.
