Daphne bholua

Also known as Nepalese paper plant. This daphne is an evergreen, or semi evergreen shrub covered in very fragrant, star like clusters of whitish pink flowers. Easy to care for, this plant will bring joy during those colder winter months when not too much is in flower. Daphne prefers partial shade to full sun. However, in hotter climates, it benefits from some afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch. It thrives in well-drained, rich, and slightly acidic to neutral soil. Adding organic matter like compost can improve soil quality. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, but ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can damage the plant. Light pruning can be done after flowering to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as daphnes can be sensitive to this. Daphnes are relatively pest-resistant but watch out for aphids or spider mites. Fungal diseases can occur in overly wet conditions, so ensure good air circulation around the plant. Uses include border planting, or near outdoor living areas/doorways to bring scent as you walk by.
