Goryeo Dynasty Celadon Vase with Inlaid Chrysanthemum Design

A celadon vase fired during the Goryeo Dynasty. It features a shape known as Yuhuchun (pear-shaped vase), characterized by a swelling body and a trumpet-shaped mouth. The body is molded into an eight-lobed melon shape, with the ridges serving as dividers for the densely inlaid patterns. The main section of the body is adorned with a continuous design of large and small chrysanthemum motifs. Above this, a series of patterns including beaded, smaller chrysanthemums, arabesques, and greek key patterns extend up toward the mouth. The lower section is finished with a lotus-petal design. Two types of patterns are used in combination, arranged alternately between the vertical ridges. The celadon glaze is a vivid grayish-blue, creating tonal variations as it pools thickly in the recessed areas. The glaze has a high glass content, resulting in distinct crackle-glaze patterns. It stands on a thick, ring-shaped foot, with clear kiln marks remaining on the foot's resting surface. There is a small aged deterioration on the surface, but overall it is luster and in good condition. The piece has likely undergone some maintenance involving light surface polishing. Traces of the original weathering remain slightly visible around the rim and along the ribs. The base and the surrounding area show more pronounced weathering, yet remain in good condition, conveying a pleasing antique character.
