Paper Pilgrims

Ever since the emergence of the study of religions as an independent discipline, it has been closely intertwined with travel writing. Scholars of religion have long drawn on travel writing as one of their central sources; and conversely, representatives of the discipline have also themselves authored works of travel writing.Paper Pilgrims is the first collection of essays to systematically explore the entanglements of travel writing and the study of religions, bringing together studies ranging from medieval Islamic travel accounts and Christian pilgrims’ reports to northern European, ancient Greek, Chinese, and African travelogues.
