Made by the Nukak-Makú, an Indigenous group living deep within the Guaviare region of Colombia’s Amazon basin, these baskets are woven from bejuco yaré, a natural vine fiber. Traditionally, they were used to carry firewood, food, and medicinal plants. Each basket is a living artifact—no two are ever the same in color, weave, or dimensions. The Nukak-Makú are Colombia’s last remaining nomadic people. After first contact with the outside world in 1988, many families were displaced by Colombia's armed conflict. Today, they live in the rainforest surrounding San José del Guaviare and visit the town several times a year to sell their handmade baskets, hammocks, and jewelry. Use these baskets for styling or storage. They are functional, decorative, and carry a meaningful story. Details: Materials: bejuco yaré fiber, natural plant dyes Colors: natural with brown and rust; patterning varies on each basket Care: Recommended for indoor use. Keep dry, avoid bending or packing. Spot clean with a damp cloth. Dimensions: Small: 10–13" D Large: 15.5–20" D Handmade by Artisans: Slight variations in shape, size, and weave are natural and part of the basket’s character, making every piece a one-of-a-kind work of art.
