Purple & Green Center Torch Coral
The torch coral, Euphyllia glabrescens, is one of the most iconic large-polyp stony corals in the reef aquarium hobby. Known for its long, flowing tentacles and graceful movement, it brings a unique sense of motion to a reef tank. This variety displays a classic colour combination that draws the eye without being overly fluorescent. In a home reef, the torch coral presents as a colony of individual polyps extending from a branching calcareous base. During the day, each polyp reveals long, fleshy tentacles that sway in the current. This particular morph features deep green tentacles that terminate in bright, contrasting tips, creating a subtle but engaging display. Its polyps remain extended throughout the day, often retracting at night. Successful torch coral care hinges on moderate, indirect water flow—enough to create a gentle, swaying motion in the tentacles without blasting them. They do best under low to moderate lighting, in the 75-150 PAR range, typically in the middle to upper regions of the tank. While photosynthetic, they will benefit from occasional feedings of meaty foods like mysis or specialised LPS pellets. The most important consideration is spacing; torch corals produce long, potent sweeper tentacles that can damage any neighbouring corals within a 15-20cm radius. Stable water parameters are key, with calcium around 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400 ppm. Given its need for personal space, a torch coral makes a great centerpiece in a dedicated spot on the rockwork. It fits well in mixed reef systems where its aggressive nature can be accommodated. The constant movement of its polyps provides a welcome contrast to more static coral colonies and becomes a focal point for observing fish and invertebrate behaviour. This is not a WYSIWYG listing; you'll receive a specimen of the same species with similar size and colouration to the one pictured, hand-picked for health and colour.
