At nearly three decades old, he has become one of Banff National Park’s most recognized bears, a powerful symbol of strength, endurance and the untamed character of Alberta’s mountain landscape. He has spent a remarkable life roaming Banff National Park, Alberta, creating stories many Canadians know well. Frequently featured in local and national news, he has become Canada’s most famous bear. On this cool June morning in the Canadian Rockies, Jason Bantle of All in the Wild Photography had another unforgettable encounter with him. Warm morning light, just clearing the peaks of Banff’s Rocky Mountains, illuminated The Boss with a soft, natural catchlight, adding depth, energy and grandeur to an already powerful subject. Jason was thrilled as he photographed the scene, knowing the exceptional light would help create a memorable image. As The Boss lumbered steadily toward him, Jason captured several photographs while keeping both himself and the bear safe. In that perfect moment, the bear’s size, strength, confidence, and presence showed exactly why he is regarded as “the real deal.” After more than two dozen encounters over the years, Jason feels a meaningful connection with The Boss—one rooted in the bear’s story and Jason’s desire to portray it.
