Antique 18K Solid Gold and Enamel Locket dated 1889

This sentimental, antique French locket was crafted in the late 19th century. The front bears an elaborate gold monogram while the back is applied with a raised gold cross, engraved with the date 1889. The interior holds a functional hinged glass partition which can be used to hold a sentimental keepsake. This partition is a common feature of French Belle Epoque lockets. The locket formerly held a piece of hair, confirming it's status as mourning jewelry, which was worn to commemorate and remember a deceased family member or loved one. The ornate monogram suggests that the piece was individually commissioned or belonged to a particular family or wearer. The locket is hallmarked with an eagle head for solid 18k gold.
