Frost Cloth for Garden

A frost forecast in the evening can kill seedlings and tender crops overnight, and by morning the damage is already done. This garden frost cloth is a light non-woven fabric you cut from the roll and lay over the bed when cold is coming, then pull back once the sun is up. It traps a layer of warmer air against the soil and shelters the foliage underneath. Buy it before the first autumn frosts and keep it within reach through to late spring. Water in the leaf and stem tissue freezes, the cells rupture, and the growth collapses into limp dark patches that do not recover. Then add enough on every side for the fabric to reach the ground and be weighted down. Do not size it to the exact footprint of the bed.
