A spectacular pair of vintage diamond chandelier earrings, believed to date to circa 1980, beautifully made in 18ct white gold and set with approximately 2.82 carats of sparkling diamonds. Inspired by the extraordinary glamour of Art Deco jewellery, the earrings feature an elaborate geometric design, with long, elegant diamond-set sections leading to beautifully articulated chandelier drops. The design takes its inspiration from the extraordinary diamond jewellery of the 1920s and 1930s, when jewellers embraced strong geometric forms, contrasting diamond cuts and dramatic, freely moving earrings. Long diamond chandeliers became synonymous with the glamour of the Jazz Age and the elegance of Hollywood's early film stars. During the 1970s and 1980s, there was a renewed fascination with the glamour of the Art Deco period. Jewellers revisited the bold architectural lines, intricate openwork and dramatic diamond-set fringes of the earlier designs, creating wonderfully theatrical pieces inspired by the elegance of the past. Although these earrings are later creations rather than original Art Deco pieces, they capture that same wonderful sense of movement, sophistication and Hollywood glamour. The combination of round brilliant-cut diamonds and angular baguettes gives the design a particularly beautiful balance between sparkle.
