Kalighat painting is a traditional art form west Bengal. It emerged in 19th-century Kolkata, under the British rule. The Kalighat Temple in southern Kolkata drew large numbers of devotees and European visitors, prompting craftsmen and artisans from nearby villages to migrate there in search of work. These artists, originally painters of scrolls or Pattachitra, began creating a new style of painting that was minimalistic. The work usually features one or two figures & bold outlines. This evolution gave rise to what is now known as the Kalighat style of painting. Also, the unique treatment of letting the artwork flow on to the edge of the frame makes it a extremely striking. This has been painted by our contemporary artist Comes with a hook attached on the back to hang on the wall.
