Candy Apple Zoanthids
Candy Apple Zoanthids, Zoanthus sp., are vividly colored colonial polyps known for their bright contrasting centers and bold skirt coloration. This specimen displays luminous yellow to yellow-green oral discs surrounded by intense orange-red radial coloration, deep burgundy accents, and dark red to purple skirts with brighter red-orange tips. The sharply contrasting yellow centers create a strong focal point in each polyp, while the surrounding red and burgundy coloration gives the colony its distinctive “Candy Apple” appearance. When fully open, the tightly grouped polyps create a dramatic multicolor display with especially strong contrast under reef aquarium lighting. Zoanthus species are colonial cnidarians composed of individual polyps connected by a common basal mat. They contain symbiotic photosynthetic dinoflagellates that provide much of their nutritional energy, while the polyps can also capture fine suspended plankton and organic particles. Because external coloration and morphology alone are not sufficient for reliable species-level identification within the genus, Zoanthus sp. is the most scientifically appropriate designation for this colony. Care Guide: Scientific Name: Zoanthus sp. Care Level: Easy to Moderate Lighting: Low to Moderate Water Flow: Moderate, variable flow Placement: Lower to middle areas of the aquarium depending on lighting intensity Temperament: Semi-aggressive; may spread onto neighboring rockwork Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic; may also benefit from fine suspended plankton and organic particles Growth Form: Colonial polyps spreading across a common basal mat Water Parameters: Maintain stable reef aquarium temperature and salinity. Keep alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium consistent, with nitrate and phosphate measurable and reasonably stable rather than excessively low. Special Considerations: Provide enough water movement to prevent debris from collecting between the polyps without causing them to remain closed. Allow room for colony expansion onto nearby rockwork. Use appropriate protective practices when handling, cutting, or fragging zoanthids because some species may contain palytoxin or related compounds.
