USAAF Roundel (Jan 1947 - Present) Lapel Pin
On Jan 14ᵗʰ, 1947, a red horizontal stripe was added within each of the white side bars, producing the basic form of the US national aircraft insignia still used today. It was introduced while the US Army Air Forces still existed, several months before the independent United States Air Force was established in Sep 1947. The same basic insignia has continued in US military aviation use, although modern aircraft frequently use subdued monochrome versions.
