The Mandau is the traditional weapon of the Dayak people of Borneo. The name mandau literally means “head hunter”, but the sword is used as a jungle knife and tool, as well as for head hunting. The blade has a unique shape, without a point, and is for cutting only. The hilts are generally of carved animal bone, although sometimes human bones are used. This example features hardwood grip wrapped with braided plant-based fibers with carved animal bone pommel. Single-edged 18 5/8″ (47.3 cm) blade with rounded tip and notched back edge and ricasso. Wood scabbard (probably bamboo) with carved throat and woven plant based fiber bands, decoration, and integral belt with wood catch. Does not appear that it was made to accept the pisau raut side knife, and there is none present. Overall length 24 1/2″ (62.2 cm), not including scabbard.
