Tori Yoshino Daido chawan
A Hagi chawan by Yoshino Tōri, a ceramic artist based in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. This chawan is made with classic Daido clay, offering a soft yet profound clay texture that is central to its appeal. Over a body tinged faintly with reddish and biwa-colored tones, the white glaze remains like melting snow, while subtle grey hues create a front almost reminiscent of katami-gawari, a divided contrast of expression. The form has a smooth, sensuous quality that recalls Kōetsu, while the finger marks and white glaze create a landscape almost like the surface of a planet. The slightly recessed foot, the fine crackles spread across the bowl, and the kairagi texture forming scenery within the interior all convey the rich character unique to Hagi chawan. Rustic yet dignified, this is a powerful yet gentle work in Yoshino Tōri’s distinctive style—one that will surely deepen in expression the more it is used.
