BERNIE SPAIN

Whilst working on his Regeneration:75 Years of London's South Bank with Anthony Bates, I discovered Bernadette (Bernie) Spain, an activist, psychologist and people’s hero who is the newest of my Hard Act illustrations. The South Bank’s regeneration is partly due to Bernie’s brilliantly organised resistance to the destructive forces of commercialism whose brief life (she died at 50) is celebrated with the Bernie Spain Gardens, laid out near Gabriel’s Wharf along the beautiful South Bank walk. I find her such a magnificent, clever and charismatic presence; I wish I could have met her. I really hope this picture does her justice but I’m pretty certain that it doesn’t. Limited Edition of 50.
