A Large Zhenmushou Tomb Guardian Figure
Tang Dynasty, China, 618–907 CE Chinese terracotta tomb guardian figure modeled with powerful features and an imposing stance intended to ward off evil spirits. Known as zhenmushou, or earth spirits, these mythological guardians were placed within tombs to protect the deceased and maintain spiritual balance in the afterlife. They also protected the living from roaming spirits; they marked the physical boundary between the living and the dead. This figure has a remarkable plasticity of form -it feels almost alive. It stands above a bull, symbolizing its triumph over dark and powerful forces. The yellow pottery base is covered in a white slip with traces of blue pigment around the eyes.
