August 22nd 1-4pm In this 3-hour workshop, participants will learn the art of modern kintsugi, the Japanese-inspired practice of repairing broken pottery with epoxy resin and metallic powders. This contemporary approach makes the beautiful philosophy of kintsugi accessible, transforming breaks and cracks into golden seams that celebrate an object’s history. Perfect for beginners, this hands-on class will guide you through the fundamentals of modern kintsugi repair. You’ll learn how to carefully assess breaks, prepare surfaces for bonding, mix and apply epoxy resin, and create those signature gold veins that make each piece unique. We’ll explore the meditative nature of this craft and the philosophy behind embracing imperfection as part of beauty. During the workshop, you’ll work on repairing 1 ceramic pieces. You’re welcome to bring a broken item from home that holds sentimental value (such as a favorite mug, bowl, or plate), or we can provide pre-broken ceramics for you to practice on. For your first piece, we require 1 or 2 breaks max in order to stay within the workshop’s duration, and leaving with a finished piece. All materials and tools will be provided, including epoxy resin, metallic powders in various colors, mixing supplies, and application tools. Materials used in class will not be food safe, but food safe kits will be available for purchase. We recommend wearing an apron or clothes that can get messy, and please note that we’ll be working with epoxy which requires careful handling. Gloves and masks will be provided.
