Mid-Century Conference Table Restoration 1. Background The table was presented to Vintage Luxury as a vintage mid-century conference table with an intended scope for a full restoration (versus light restoration.) A tabletop from this era typically falls into one of three categories: solid timber, timber veneer, or a laminate/melamine composite. Upon stripping back the top and legs for a detailed inspection, our team identified that this specific piece features a printed Laminex/melamine laminate top rather than real wood. While laminate is highly unusual for a premium mid-century piece due to its historically lower material tier, the choice of material makes sense contextually: it allowed the original makers to achieve a complex, multi-directional starburst pattern layout through a cost-effective manufacturing method, bypassing the high expense of real timber veneer work at the time. The current tabletop is heavily worn, exhibiting a combination of minor to major surface scratches alongside minor and major deep-set ring marks with chips on the edges and peeling laminate, the cosmetic condition is a 5/10 at best. 2. Problem Statement The core challenge of this project centers on the physical limitations of the material. Because laminate is a non-porous, chemically inert resin sheet with a paper-thin printed pattern layer, it cannot be sanded down, filled, or refinished the way natural timber can. Deep ring marks and scratches are baked directly into the plastic composition. Attempting to sand deep enough to erase these blemishes will completely burn through the printed wood-grain pattern, permanently exposing the brown paper backing underneath. Project Scope: Premium Solid Timber Top Replacement & Custom Walnut Refinishing 1. Structural Engineering & Substrate Specification To achieve the exact high-end aesthetic required for Paper Stone Scissors, we will replace the original, deeply compromised vintage laminate top with a brand-new, premium Solid American White Oak tabletop blank that will be reprinted or stained to a walnut like colour tbc by customer Engineered Block-Core Architecture: The substrate utilizes an interlocking solid hardwood block-core matrix that breaks up internal grain tension, permanently preventing the natural warping or twisting typical of traditional full-length timber slabs. Double-Thickness Rim: The top features a precision cold-pressed, face-to-face perimeter lamination. This delivers an architectural, chunky 40mm thick profile while increasing the structural rigidity of the circle. Built-in Steel Bracing: The underside is structurally reinforced by two heavy-duty, recessed steel C-channels routed flush straight through the timber planks. These tracks allow the timber to breathe laterally through seasonal Melbourne humidity shifts while keeping the table perfectly flat. Leg Base Compatibility: Your vintage cast-aluminum spider-arm base acts as a secondary metal bracing web. Because the structural arms extend outward to within 10cm of the table's perimeter, they completely eliminate the risk of edge-sag. The table will be mounted utilizing flat-bottomed pan-head fasteners, allowing the timber to expand and contract smoothly across the metal arms without splitting. 2. Premium Refinishing & Color Customization The brand-new solid timber top will be brought into our workshop as a raw canvas to undergo a multi-stage color transformation to achieve your tailored luxury Walnut aesthetic. Grain Preparation: Our workshop team will mechanically sand the smooth-faced oak top down through successive orbital passes, finalizing at a 180 to 240-grit finish. This beautifully opens up the oak pores to accept pigments uniformly. On-Site Sample Testing: To fully control the final tone and eliminate color distortion caused by the natural straw-yellow undertones of White Oak, we will execute live tint tests completely hidden on the underside of your tabletop. The Osmo Tinting Matrix: We will test a curated selection of professional Osmo Wood Wax Finishes to find the absolute match for your space. The tint options slated for your review are 3143 Cognac Satin, 3164 Oak Satin, 3166 Walnut Satin, 3168 Oak Antique Satin, and the Terra Tint. The Protective Lock Coat: Once the preferred tint coat is applied and cured, we will lock it down with two coats of clear Osmo Polyx-Oil. This creates a microporous, commercial-grade surface that is highly stain-resistant against wine, coffee, juices, and water. It will not crack, flake, or blister under heavy corporate use. 3. Commercial Terms & Delivery Total Production Turnaround: 2 Weeks from deposit receipt to on-site delivery. Payment Milestone Terms: 50% EFT Deposit required to initiate procurement and workshop scheduling, with the remaining 50% balance due immediately upon completion. Logistics & Handover: Fully included within scope—professional transport, specialized transit protection, on-site delivery, and final technical assembly to your vintage base at the Paper Stone Scissors premises. Workshop Note: If you are ready to proceed with this structural solid wood transformation and wish to lock in our current two-week workshop production queue, please reply confirming your preferred initial tint direction from the Osmo matrix above (or wait till we sample it for you underneath the table for visual selection), and we will issue your 50% deposit invoice to initiate the build.
