Product Notes: What is a Flow Restrictor? This high quality valve ensures that the water flow rate is low enough to give your system’s UV lamp enough time to fully sterilize any tiny pathogens that may remain following the first and third stage filters. The CottagePure system’s UV light requires a maximum flow rate of 1 GPM (gallon per minute) to do its job properly. Previously, that was accomplished with a restrictor built into the third stage filter (which limited flow to 0.6 GPM). That specific filter is no longer available, so this separate flow restricting device is now required between the UV light’s input and the housing’s output. What is Included? The restrictor comes with pre-attached tubing to replace the tubing that runs from the top right of the 3-chamber white housing to the metal UV housing. How Does it Work? It’s adjustable, with a notched metal dial. Actual delivery rate will depend not only on the preceding filters but also on your incoming water pressure, which can vary considerably depending on how you are drawing/pumping water. Suggested Usage: To use it properly, you’ll need to find the right dial setting for the water flow to be between 0.6 and 1.0 GPM (~2.3-3.7 litres/min). To do that, first install the device with its tubing into the output top corner of the housing (without hooking it up to the UV assembly). While you’re flushing the third stage filter for 5-10 minutes before its initial use, grab a bucket, a timer, and a measuring cup. Aim the output tube from the device into the empty bucket; let the water run for exactly one minute; and measure how much water flowed at that setting. If it’s above or too close to a gallon (or is far below that and too slow for your liking), adjust the dial and repeat the measuring procedure until you hit the sweet spot.
