Namingha, Les – “Layers LXIV” Jar with Sikyatki Birds, Checker board
Les Namingha is one of those potters who continues to defy expectations in his innovative clay art. This jar is entitled “Layers LXIV.” The shape of the jar has a high shoulder and short neck. The jar is painted with acrylic in layers. Les said that it took him over a month to paint this jar! The bottom layers have swirling lines that represent the Hopi migration pattern. The next layer is a checkerboard pattern. Finally there are overlapping Sikyatki inspired birds. The birds are all in various colors and and the body of each consists of various traditional Hopi-Tewa designs. There is an exceptional complexity to this jar in the painting, making it a bold and creative piece of art in clay. The jar is signed, “Les Namingha”. Once again Les creates such thoughtful work and challenges the viewer to find a deeper meaning in each piece!
