Sierra Sur pottery is made in this mountainous region in Southern Oaxaca. It is produced by women using local clay and ancestral techniques. Pottery has been made in Oaxaca for more than 2000 years. Most potters are based in the Valley Central and use black or orange clay. Sierra Sur pottery has a warm earthy feel that reflects the colors of the earth found in Sierra Sur. The sap and leaves of copal and tobacco are used to create a smoky black overlay. Each design is made by hand and has a subtle variation in color and shape.
