ABC “Sucker” Dice Box by U.F. Grant, Mak Magic

This wonderful Die Box invented by U.F. Grant is surprisingly tricky to name — the instructions and advertisements use several different titles over the years. I’ve seen it listed as: Grant’s ABC “Sucker” Dice Box — U.F. Grant instructions A.B.C. Thru Sucker Block Box — Tannen’s 1969 catalog The A.B.C. Thru Sucker Change Box — U.F. Grant instructions A‑B‑C Box — MAK Magic 1981 catalog Whatever name it goes by, it’s a wonderful variation on the standard Die Box. Instead of the familiar, almost anticlimactic ending where the die vanishes from the box and reappears in the hat, this version adds a stronger sequence: the die vanishes, the audience still isn’t convinced the box is empty even after you show both sides with the holes straight through, and then you produce a bright orange from the box — proving not only that the die is gone, but that something large enough to fill the space has taken its place. I love it. (Note: these are not the original letters. When I received the prop, the lettering was fading and the block had been mislabeled, making the effect unperformable. I repainted the block and applied fresh letters, and now it works perfectly and looks great.) _EF A large SOLID block with the letters “A-B C on it is placed in a box and a door slid in front of the block. As the door slides from one end of the box to the other, the spectators hear the block going from one compartment to the other. My, how clever they are! After the usual by-play of first showing one side then the other, the door is slid off the >ox and they can peer into an empty box. THE BLOCK IS GONE’ Since the box has windows in the rear, they can see CLEAR THRU THE BOX. There is no place for a mouse to hide, let alone a big bad block! In place of the block, you can have an orange, a ball or any other item that will fit into the one compartment of the box. Or, just have i empty. The solid block can be reproduced from some unexpected place. A finely engineered piece of magic and reasonably priced. Here, for the first time, s a SUCKER DIE BOX PLUS!!
