It comes from Piedras Viejas, planted on the steep Pre-Cordillera slopes of El Challao, Las Heras, due west of downtown Mendoza at 1,585 meters (5,200 feet), one of the most extreme vineyards in the world. Terrazas is a bottling of two vineyard blocks whose soil is mostly lutite, a black sedimentary rock, with intrusions of limestone; these blocks only began producing seven years after planting. "Grown on black rock and limestone rather than the alluvial soils of Mendoza's valleys, this Malbec carries the singular aromas and flavors of a true mountain vineyard: a wine whose personality comes from stone and altitude, unmistakably different from classic Mendoza Malbec."
