Kosmische Musik: Twelve Bands of Krautrock (1969–1976)
Also in this series: Sound of Confusion (1966–1986) · Walkin' in the Sand (1958–1964) Twelve bands, seven years, from Amon Düül II and Can in 1969 to La Düsseldorf in 1976, in order of debut album. Between Munich, Cologne, Berlin and Düsseldorf, a generation of German musicians stopped copying British and American rock and built something of their own. Can, Kraftwerk and Neu! get top billing, because almost everything that came after them goes back to these three. Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel and Cluster took the music into space, Popol Vuh into the spiritual, Guru Guru and Faust into noise and collage, and Kraftwerk and Neu! found the motorik pulse that still runs through electronic music today. Harmonia and La Düsseldorf close the line, with the same musicians splitting and recombining. The title takes the name the German scene used for its own music, rather than the label the British press gave it. A typographic print in the style of an old gig bill.
