Helichrysum Water (Organic Hydrosol)
Helichrysum hydrolate is often expected to smell like a dilute form of the oil. The water holds a different fraction. Hydrocarbons and most esters separate with the oil, and the more polar, oxygenated compounds remain in the water, which gives it a drier, more herbal profile. 01 · Origin Helichrysum italicum, of the Asteraceae, grows on dry, stony ground around the Mediterranean. This water is distilled in France from the blossoms of wild-crafted organic plants. The names immortelle and everlasting refer to flower heads that hold their colour once dried. 02 · Process The flowering tops are steam distilled and the condensed water separated from the oil. Wild stands vary from season to season, and the hydrolate varies with them. Fine flakes may form in the bottle; they are natural and do not affect quality. Comparative work with Helichrysum Italicum, Superior (No. 1597) shows which notes belong to the water and which to the oil. 03 · In Practice Herbal, warm and faintly honeyed, with a dry, hay-like finish. Facial mists and toners, the water phase of creams and lotions, compresses and body sprays. Layers well with rose, lavender and neroli hydrolates. Store below 10°C / 50°F. General information: For external use. Keep cool and away from sunlight. Use within 12 months of opening. Keep out of reach of children.
