WWII Japanese 20x120 Military Binoculars by Tokyo Optical Company

An exceptional pair of fully restored military binoculars, manufactured by the Tokyo Optical Company for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Dating from the WWII era, these imposing 20x120 binoculars were designed as powerful long-range observation instruments, most likely for use aboard naval vessels or at coastal observation positions. The big eye binoculars are marked 20×120 3°, denoting 20x magnification, substantial 120mm objective lenses and a 3-degree field of view. They also carry the distinctive triangular TOKO mark of the Tokyo Optical Company – the Japanese optics manufacturer that later became known as Topcon. Further Japanese markings include 空技廠 (Kūgishō), an abbreviation associated with the Naval Air Technical Arsenal of the Imperial Japanese Navy, providing an important indication of their original military provenance. Originally acquired in unrestored condition, these antique binoculars have since undergone a comprehensive restoration. Their substantial metal bodies once covered in naval grade paint, have been completely stripped and polished to a high lustre Most importantly, the binoculars remain fully functional, with excellent-quality lenses and optics. Their 20x magnification and large 120mm objective lenses were designed for long-distance observation, including spotting vessels and aircraft, as well as naval navigation and surveillance. Their scale and construction reflect the highly specialised military-grade optics produced in Japan during this period. One particularly evocative detail has deliberately been left unrestored. The original rubber eyepieces show historic heat damage and partial melting, possibly sustained during their working military life. Rather than replace them, we chose to preserve them as a tangible reminder of the binoculars' history and former use – a striking contrast to the highly polished finish of the restored instrument. A new set of black rubber eyepieces is also included for more comfortable viewing, allowing the originals to be preserved without compromising their use. The binoculars also retain their original fitted wooden storage case, complete with surviving Japanese instruction and inventory labels. Remarkably, one of these labels contains detailed instructions for caring for the rubber eyepiece components, including warnings to protect them from oil, sweat, sunlight and moisture. At this scale, these are far removed from conventional handheld binoculars. The huge optical barrels, high-lustre polished finish and original Japanese military markings give them an extraordinary sculptural presence. Combined with their restored and fully operational optics, they remain as impressive to look through as they are to look at. A rare piece of Japanese naval and optical history, these Tokyo Optical Company 20x120 binoculars would make an exceptional centrepiece for a private collection, interior or commercial space. Specifications The tripod stands 105cm tall and can be extended by a further 70cm. It has a 60cm floor spread. we supply aluminium cups for the tripod feet to sit within, to protect flooring. The binoculars add approximately 30cm to the overall height when positioned horizontal, giving a maximum overall height of approximately 205cm.
