This tour invites you to explore the museum’s collections from an unexpected angle: the striking connections between archaeology and the Bible — a text that has endured centuries of controversy, withstood attempts to discredit it, and continues to be illuminated by history. What we will explore together From the empires of Akkad, Assyria and Babylon to the kingdom of Moab and the Medo-Persian empire — spanning the 3rd to the 1st millennium BC — the Louvre’s collections offer an extraordinary field of investigation: What does Accad (Akkad), the oldest known kingdom in Mesopotamia, reveal about the world described in the Bible? How do the remains of the magnificent Khorsabad courtyard shed light on certain biblical accounts? Which works allow us to step into Daniel’s footsteps, in Babylon, under the reign of Nebuchadnezzar? Where can we find the Tetragrammaton יהוה engraved on a 3,000-year-old stele — and how did this stone survive its own destruction? Yet the Bible had already placed them, with remarkable precision, within a coherent geographical and historical framework — long before archaeologists’ spades brought them back to light.
