The corridor stairway ascended into darkness as the search party pushed deeper into the colony complex. A Sergeant paused beside the heavy machinery housing while a Corporal swept the lower stairwell with a rifle mounted flashlight. Emergency lights flickered across the metal steps, casting long shadows against the industrial walls and sealed maintenance doors. Scratches along the stair rail suggested panicked movement from colonists trying to escape whatever had spread through the lower levels.
