TraumaSim's Infected Open Wound is a self-adhesive silicone wound prosthetic presenting a medically accurate infected open wound — a wound where the signs of localised or spreading infection are present alongside an open wound bed, requiring prompt clinical recognition, assessment, and management response. Wound infection recognition is a foundational clinical skill for nurses, paramedics, and any healthcare professional involved in wound assessment and management. The classic signs — erythema, warmth, oedema, purulent exudate, malodour, increased pain, and wound bed deterioration — are what trainees need to be able to identify accurately and respond to with appropriate urgency. An infected wound that is not identified and escalated promptly can progress from localised infection to spreading cellulitis, systemic infection, and sepsis — a progression with serious patient safety implications. The infected open wound presentation combines the open wound cavity of a significant wound with the visual indicators of infection — discolouration, exudate characteristics, and periwound tissue changes that signal infection rather than normal wound healing. That combined presentation challenges trainees to assess not just the wound itself but the wound's infection status — a two-layer assessment that integrates wound type recognition with infection sign identification and appropriate management response selection. The 0.5 cm wound depth adds realistic wound bed and exudate detail at close clinical assessment range. Manufactured from durable, life-like silicone with tapered edges that blend naturally onto skin or manikin surfaces. Hand painted — minor variation in appearance between units should be expected.
