Lot No. 413 The Cossack jacket emerged during the 1920s as one of the earliest forms of civilian leather outerwear, bridging the gap between tailored coats and practical sporting garments. Worn for motoring, travel, and everyday wear, its simple front, clean waistline, and balanced proportions made it a defining silhouette of the period. The R. West Cossack is patterned directly from an original 1920s example, retaining the natural length and measured proportions characteristic of early models. The jacket is intended to sit cleanly at the waist in the manner of the originals. The outer is cut from Tuscan brown-core steerhide, finished in a black pigment surface. Firm yet supple, the leather carries a natural sheen and develops character gradually as the surface wears, revealing its undertones through extended use. The body is lined in brown corduroy - a material commonly found in early 20th Century jackets - providing warmth while maintaining the understated character of the design. Sleeves are lined in black organic cotton drill for breathability and ease of wear. Fastening is by mottled dark brown natural buffalo horn buttons. Horn buttons were traditionally favoured for quality garments due to their strength, resistance to cracking, and the subtle variation unique to each piece. Waist adjustment is provided by hammered nickel North & Judd reproduction buckles, based on early American hardware. A straightforward leather jacket of the interwar period, the Cossack reflects an era before specialised flight and motorcycle designs - practical, restrained, and intended for regular wear.
