"Avē Imperātor, moritūrī tē salūtant!" If one aspect of the ancient world is nearly universally known, it's the gladiator battles held in arenas throughout the Roman world. Although they were superstar professional athletes, many with dedicated fans, it was primarily low-status individuals such as slaves and criminals populating their ranks. These staged fights began as funeral games held in honor of the deceased, but later evolved into massive displays showcasing the sponsor's political power - in many cases the Emperor himself. Our design features a Murmillo (fish-man) helmet recovered from the gladiator barracks at Pompeii and dating to the 1st century AD.
