Produced in 1948–1949, this set represents the desirable early production run featuring wire mesh roof vents, horizontal die-cast nose louvers, and dual-motor drive in the powered unit. Condition Details & Inspection: Mechanical & Testing: Fully tested and running smoothly. The 3-position E-unit cycles properly through forward, neutral, and reverse. Cosmetics: Great vintage condition for its age. Both shells feature clean dark grey paint with crisp white "NEW YORK CENTRAL" side lettering, "GM" / "Built by Lionel" side badges, and nose decals intact. Details & Hardware: Wire mesh roof screen vents are present and intact on both units. Cab horns, headlight housings, windows, and front steps are present. Underside: Clean die-cast frames and trucks with normal operational wear on pickup rollers and wheels. Battery compartment cover is clean and present on the powered unit.
