Painted on a silk scarf featuring this historic grid, a showjumping horse emerges in layered, semi transparent acrylic, allowing the pattern beneath to remain visible. The horse’s hooves overlap the scarf’s cream border, giving the illusion that it is jumping through the frame. This work unites textile tradition and equestrian motion, linking fashion history directly back to the horse. Inside the Art: The Story Behind Timeless Tattersall The foundation of Timeless Tattersall is the tattersall pattern itself, a checked textile design defined by evenly spaced vertical and horizontal stripes forming a grid of squares. The pattern takes its name from Tattersall’s horse market in London, founded in 1766 by Richard Tattersall, where the design was first woven into horse blankets to keep animals warm during auctions. Over time, the pattern moved from stable to wardrobe, becoming a staple of British country style. The silk scarf design features four horse heads arranged face-to-face across the checked field, each fitted with head and neck guards tied neatly with bows. At the center sits an orange badge reading “Hermès Sellier Paris”. The word sellier, meaning saddler in French, reinforces the fashion house’s origins as a harness maker. The palette of orange, black, cream, white, brown, and red underscores both heritage and visual clarity, with Hermès’ iconic orange anchoring the composition. Painted over this structured foundation is a showjumping horse, executed in layered, semi-transparent acrylic. The paint application allows the scarf’s geometry to show through the horse’s form, creating a dialogue between pattern and motion. The horse’s hooves extend beyond the lower border of the scarf, subtly breaking the frame and suggesting the moment of clearing a jump, suspended between effort and release. For the original work, the silk scarf is mounted to a wood panel handmade by me and finished with a metallic gold floater frame. The frame is intentionally selected to complement the composition while accentuating the scarf’s black contrast edge, reinforcing the piece’s identity as both textile and fine art object.
