To the back it reads: “Old Bill says, take a nip nightly and think of Blighty. Cambrai, 1917”. Old Bill was created by Captain Bruce Bairnsfather, a British soldier and artist. Portrayed as a grumbling walrus-moustached veteran soldier. He was a symbol of British ‘Tommies’ and their gallows humour spirit during the war. ‘Cambrai’ refers to the Battle of Cambrai, France. The Battle of Cambrai in 1917 was a major British offensive on the Western Front remembered for the first massed, effective use of tanks, a surprise artillery plan, and a powerful German counter-attack. Fought from November 20 to December 7, 1917 in northern France, it broke the long stalemate of trench warfare before ending with both sides back near their start lines.
