Aster, Calico (Potted)

Calico aster is a native perennial valued for its fine-textured form and late-season blooms that bring light color and pollinator activity into fall plantings. Offered as potted stock grown in root-prune pouches, it can be planted through the growing season when conditions allow, making it well suited for pollinator gardens and woodland or meadow edges. Botanically known as Symphyotrichum lateriflorum, this species produces airy clusters of small white flowers that mature to rosy centers as the season progresses. Native across much of the US, it is especially valued for extending bloom into the late season when fewer native plants are flowering. Flower heads change color as they mature, meaning flowers on the same plant or even within a single flower head may be different colors, giving this plant its common name. Calico aster typically grows 2 to 3 feet tall with a similar spread, forming a loose, branching structure that integrates well into mixed plantings. It can be cut or pinched back in late spring to promote shorter flower stalks. It grows in part to full, sun and establishes in a wide range of soils, from well-drained to more consistently moist conditions. This species fits well in hedgerows, naturalized borders, and restoration plantings where late-season bloom and ecological value are priorities.
