Say hello to the drama queens of the isopod world — Hissing Isopods! These fascinating little crustaceans get their name from their ability to produce a soft hissing or squeaking sound when disturbed. With chunky armored bodies and bold personalities, they’re one of the most interactive and entertaining isopods you can keep. Origins & Appearance Hissing Isopods belong to the Armadillidae family and originate from tropical regions of Southeast Asia. They are large, heavily armored isopods, often reaching 2–3 cm. Their dark, glossy shells and strong rolling ability make them look like tiny living tanks. Behaviour & Habitat These isopods are active, curious, and surprisingly bold. When threatened, they may roll into a ball or emit their signature hissing sound by forcing air through their spiracles. They enjoy warm, humid environments with plenty of hiding spots, bark, and leaf litter. Diet & Care Hissing Isopods are detritivores, feeding on decaying leaves, wood, vegetables, and protein-rich foods. They need high humidity, calcium sources, and good airflow to thrive. They breed well once established and make excellent display and bioactive species. Quick Facts Scientific Name: Armadillidae sp.
