Iris hollandica (Dutch Iris)
Iris hollandica, or Dutch iris, is prized for its elegant orchid-like flowers carried on straight, strong stems that make it one of the best bulbs for cutting and for adding poise to late-spring borders. The blooms are usually held in cool blue-violet tones with contrasting yellow markings, bringing a refined, airy look that pairs beautifully with alliums, tulips and early perennials. Plant the bulbs in autumn or early winter in full sun and well-drained soil. Dutch irises dislike sitting wet, so a light, open position is ideal. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulbs can recharge. In well-drained soil they often return well and can be left undisturbed for several seasons.
