Quinta da Muradella Candea Tinto

Quinta da Muradella is a small, highly regarded estate in the Monterrei DO of Galicia in north-west Spain, founded by winemaker José Luis Mateo. Mateo is considered one of the leading figures in reviving the region’s indigenous grape varieties and terroir-focused wines. The estate’s vineyards lie near the village of Tamagos close to the Portuguese border, planted at around 370-450 metres altitude. Many vines are mature, ranging from 20 to 70 years old, contributing concentration and depth. Soils are predominantly clay with river stones and mineral elements that provide freshness and structure. Quinta da Muradella’s vineyards are certified organic. The estate has been organically certified since 2005 and practices biodynamic style farming. Candea Tinto 2022 is a field blend style red made primarily from Mencía with smaller portions of Araúxa (Tempranillo), Garnacha Tintorera, Mouratón and other native varieties. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeasts in stainless steel, with around one third whole clusters, followed by approximately 30 days maceration. The wine is aged mainly in stainless steel or concrete for roughly a year to preserve purity of fruit. Aromas of wild berries, herbs and flowers lead to a vibrant palate with fine tannins and lively acidity. This versatile red pairs beautifully with grilled pork, charcuterie, roasted vegetables and Mediterranean dishes, reflecting the minerality and elegance of its old vine roots.
