The Quickest Way to Change Your Gear Ratio: Swap the Cog The ideal gear ratio depends on how you want to ride. Some people want to go fast. Some want to cruise around without turning every ride into leg day. Others want a setup that is easier to use for trick practice. Not sure which gear ratio is right for you? Staying with the original 17T cog is perfectly fine. There is no shame in letting the factory make one decision for you. Great Value, Better Quality: grunge Cog The original 17T cog supplied with the complete bike is made from steel, but it is a very basic and inexpensive component. The grunge cog is also made from steel, but features weight-saving cutouts and a much cleaner finish. It also comes with a lockring. So while we are changing the cog, you may as well give both the cog and lockring a small but satisfying upgrade. Cog Sizes, Gear Ratios, and Skid Points For Riders Who Want More Speed: 15T Rizer 46T chainring ÷ 15T cog Gear ratio: 3.07 Skid points: 15 Melancholy / Jealousy 48T chainring ÷ 15T cog Gear ratio: 3.20 Skid points: 5 For Relaxed Riding or Trick Practice: 19T Rizer 46T chainring ÷ 19T cog Gear ratio: 2.42 Skid points: 19 Melancholy / Jealousy 48T chainring ÷ 19T cog Gear ratio: 2.53 Skid points: 19 Planning to Skid? We Recommend 10 or More Skid Points When you skid, the tire rubs against the road and gradually wears away. “Skid points” refers to the number of different positions on the tire that can make contact with the ground during a skid. If your setup has only one skid point, the same section of the tire gets punished every single time. Eventually, the tire may decide it has had enough and reward you with a puncture. For riders who skid regularly, we recommend a setup with at least 10 skid points. Even with fewer skid points, you can spread the wear by periodically repositioning the chain on the rear cog. This changes which part of the tire contacts the ground during a skid and helps reduce concentrated wear. Already Have a Favorite Cog? That Works Too. We can also install cogs from other manufacturers, including Euro-Asia, if you send the cog to Masterpista. Some unusual cogs that are not compatible with a standard lockring may be difficult to install, so please contact us before sending anything. Cog sizes from 15T to 19T can generally be used with the original chain. For larger cogs, the original chain may be too short, and you may need to purchase an additional chain. Important Notes The removed original parts will be included and shipped with your bike. Changing the cog size changes the rear wheel position, which can affect brake pad alignment and tire clearance. We may therefore cut and adjust the chain to achieve the correct setup.
