The washing station was founded in 2013 and changed ownership several times before being taken over by Habtamu Fekadu Aga in 2020. In 2022, a Penagos pulping machine was installed, contributing to greater consistency and a more homogeneous lot. Today the station employs seven permanent staff and over 100 seasonal workers. The water supply comes from a deep gravel-rock well. The station places great importance on responsible wastewater management and reducing potential environmental impact. Wastewater is treated according to its pH level and is not returned to the surrounding environment after use. A combination of machines is used for sorting, pulping and removing the mucilage. After pulping, approximately ten percent of mucilage remains on the beans, which then ferment for 24 hours. They are subsequently washed by hand and laid out on raised beds to dry for 9–12 days. During drying, the beans are protected from direct sunlight, regularly turned and checked every few hours to ensure even drying. Moisture levels are measured throughout and the beans are sorted to remove any remaining defects. After drying, the coffee is bagged and stored. The station receives approximately 900 tonnes of red cherries annually, yielding around 153 tonnes of parchment coffee. To ensure the quality of individual lots, two quality control officers monitor moisture measurements, fermentation times and drying processes. Every cherry purchase is documented with a receipt signed by the farmer. A prerequisite is that the farmer is already registered with the washing station. This registration process ensures the farmer comes from the correct region and is eligible to contribute to the lot. Receipts are additionally countersigned by several members of the washing station team to guarantee transparency. Both cherry purchases and the transfer of ownership upon leaving the station are fully documented. In addition, the washing station offers farmers basic agronomic training — covering topics such as organic farming, shade-grown coffee and regenerative growing practices. Alongside this, the station is also involved in the renovation of a nearby primary school. It further supports farmers through interest-free advance payments before harvest and a cherry collection service.
